What Is The Civil War - 940 Words

What is the Civil War? The American Civil War (1861-1865) was not fought over slavery, not at first, although slavery was at the heart of things. It was fought over the right states had to govern themselves. The South wanted strong state governments. The North wanted a strong central government. Southern soldiers: Southern soldiers, also known as the Confederate Soldiers, were proud defenders of â€Å"Southern Rights† and â€Å"Southern Independence.† They met to form a new nation called the Confederate States of America. The commander was General Robert Lee. Many soldiers were farmers and when seeds needed to be planted and crops needed harvesting, it was normal for soldiers to leave to tend to their farms. Why food was significant during the†¦show more content†¦They called these groups â€Å"messes† and referred to others in the group as â€Å"messmates†. Messmates took turns watching the meals they cooked. Foods in the Civil War were cooked over an open campfire in a cast iron skillet or kettle or sometimes on a spit. If they had the time, soldiers tried to find ways of making their dull food in variations. Food during the Civil War was not high quality and did not taste good. Confederate soldiers usually didn’t receive much food at all, especially as the war went on. The diet for the Confederate soldiers was different and usually in much less quantity than their Northern soldiers. They had bacon, cornmeal, molasses, peas, rice, and tobacco. It was the tobacco that saved them. Although it was illegal to be friendly with the enemy, but it was quiet common during the Civil War for trades to be set up between Southern and Northern soldiers. The Union had excess coffee and sugar. But the Confederates had excess tobacco. They soon found they could trade tobacco for just about anything. They even traded tobacco for newspapers, to see and read how the North was preparing for the war. Rationing was quiet common during the war. A ration is the amount of food given for one soldier (or animal) for one day. The Confederate government adopted the official US Army ration at the start of the war, although by the spring of 1862 they had to lower it more.

The Truth About Marijuana Legalization - 1539 Words

Nick Foley English 101 Professor Burch December 12, 2014 The Truth About Marijuana Ever since 1930 marijuana has been an illegal drug in the United States. Somehow even though it is illegal, it is the countries number one cash crop with the most margin for profit. Users of cannabis are not the only supporters of the legalization of marijuana, many people who do not use the drug are supportive due to the fact that they know that the prohibition of it does more harm than good. They also can see that making it legal would be useful in many ways to those people who have diseases, that way they could use it as a medicine as well as a relaxant. One more reason people are pro legalization of marijuana is due to the fact that it could really help†¦show more content†¦For example, Pharmaceutical companies lobby against cannabis because at a lower price, there are so many drugs such as pain killers or sleep medication it could replace. Another group that benefits greatly from prohibition are the drug cartels. Legalize marijuana and you cut a huge percent of their pr ofits, army strength, and political power† (truth about cannabis). When talking about the legalization of marijuana a lot of people will say it is bad for your health, which is true in the aspect of inhaling the drug and harming your lungs or even the possibility of brain cells being killed. If people want to argue that then you would need to explain alcohol and tobacco because scientifically speaking those two substances are equal to, if not worse for you than marijuana is. 79,000 people die per year from alcohol poisoning but 0 people have ever died from over dosing on marijuana (truth about cannabis). The government and many people tend to think that if marijuana becomes legal then this drug will be much more accessible to children and teens. But when looking at it children and teens have a much harder time getting their hands on alcohol or tobacco because a cashier or store clerk will check for an ID but a drug dealer will not care about the person’s age, they just want the money. Another controversial reason to keep marijuana illegal is that many state it is a

Macroeconomy of Canada Equilibrium of Demand and Supply

Question: Discuss about theMacroeconomy of Canada for Equilibrium of Demand and Supply. Answer: Summary List: Low-interest rate announced by Stephen Poloz, the governor of the Bank of Canada (Blatchford Press, 2016). Steady decline in growth of Canadian economy. Canadas economy has the potential to rise to 1.5 percent with proper management. Increasing retirement age. Low investment in businesses. Summation of Economic Concepts: The report incorporates economic concepts like domestic production in National Income Accounting, interest and investments in IS-LM, employment in Labour Economics, and Theory of Demand and Supply. Analysis: According to Stephen Poloz, the governor of the Bank of Canada, the government officials of Canada have opted for a low interest rate in the country. This is a follow up of low investment rate in the country for past few years. According to Mankiw (2014), the low interest rate will discourage people from saving. They will opt for spending the money increasing the aggregate demand. A low interest rate also enables people to borrow money from the financial institutions. This will ensure more cash in the hand of the citizen. This will help them in demanding more goods. The rise in aggregate demand will lure the producers in investing in the production of goods and services. As stated by Nixon (2014), this will increase Canadas overall expenditure and increase the Gross Domestic Product in return. There is another way the low interest rate is going to affect the economy. Those who were thinking of taking retirement early and live off the savings and pension will now get the lesser amount in hand. To avoid future problems, this working section will opt for few more working years. This will be better for the economy than creating a new workforce with less experience. All these will hit the economy of Canada as planned by increasing the investment in the production process of the economy. The result can be shown in a diagram as given below: Figure 1: Change in G.D.P due to increasing investment. Source: As created by the author. According to Rios, McConnell and Brue (2013), all the economic activities due to the low interest rate will increase the investment in the economy and push the aggregate expenditure curve upward. This will give a new equilibrium Gross Domestic Product say B, which is greater than the previous equilibrium A, as shown in the figure above. The economic situation of the country is in an emergency situation due to the low productivity level. The projected result of this low investment rate is an increase of 1.5 increase in the economy. According to the governor, this is not very inspiring for the economic agents of the country, but there are very little options which can affect the economy positively. This makes the 1.5 percent increase a lucrative one for the officials. The policy will increase the overall demand in the economy as people will have more money in hand and will want to spend it. The situation can be explained through the diagram as given below: Figure 2: Change in demand due to the policy. Source: As created by the author. In the figure above, the increase in spendable money increases the demand and pushes the demand curve to shift outward. As stated by Marshall (2013), this will increase the Gross Domestic Product of the country from C to V. This concept of demand and supply was considered while setting up the new low interest rate. Personal Interest: This decision has affected the students who have taken a loan of the flexible interest rate. One of our classmates has taken a student loan and now he is facing a lower amount repayable. This is good for the student as he will be better off. On the other hand, there is another student in the same batch who has taken a student loan on fixed interest rate. He will be worse off as in reality he has to pay more than the other student. Tension Between Self-Interest and Social Interest: As stated by Ehrenberg and Smith (2016), for this new policy, the workers who have planned their retirement will have to extend their working age to meet their planned pension package. The low interest rate will decrease the workers total interest return on their savings. This will hurt their self-interest. On the other hand, the society will be better off due to the increase in the Gross Domestic Product. Here lies the tension between self-interest and social interest. References: Blatchford, A.
